To Our Beautiful Community...

You've probably heard the phrase, "birth and death are the bookends of life" - something I have been contemplating recently. I gave birth to our little girl in December 2023, and as an end-of-life doula, it made me all the more curious about exploring the parallels between the birthing process and the journey towards end-of-life. The revelations are a tapestry of deeply human experiences, woven with threads of vulnerability, strength, and profound transition. I have discovered that these moments, labor in birth and dying, are marked by a series of intense and transformative bodily changes that are as meaningful as they are natural.

In the heart of these experiences lies the powerful ebb and flow of hormones, guiding a person through the difficult journey of childbirth, and softly accompanying a soul as they prepare to say a final goodbye. These hormonal shifts not only orchestrate the physical aspects of these life events but also color them with deep emotional hues, making these moments ripe with significance and connection.

The management of pain and the quest for comfort also draw these two experiences closer, revealing the inherent human desire for dignity and support in our most vulnerable moments. Whether through the soothing touch and words of encouragement that I desired in labor or the gentle, palliative care provided to ease the passage of those at life's end, the tenderness and compassion that emerge in these times highlight the beauty and resilience of the human spirit.

Breathing, the most fundamental sign of life, changes its rhythm in both the labor of birth and dying, serving as a poignant reminder of the body's adaptability and its inherent wisdom in guiding us through beginnings and endings. These breaths, whether labored or peaceful, are the whispers of life, marking the transitions that define our existence.

Moreover, the emotional and psychological intensity that surrounds both birth and dying illuminates the depth of the human experience. These moments reflect the joy, pain, love, and loss that are the essence of being human. They remind us of the preciousness of life, the unbreakable bonds that connect us, and the enduring strength that enables us to face life's most profound challenges.

In recognizing these similarities, we find a deeper appreciation for the journey of life, from the first cry of a newborn to the serene silence of a peaceful

departure. These transitions, though different in their nature, speak to the universal experiences of birth, life, and death, reminding us of the shared humanity that binds us all. In this light, birth and dying are not just physiological events but are profound expressions of the cycle of life, each with its own beauty, lessons, and legacy.

Grace & Grief Vigils

These monthly gatherings will tend the hard parts of our personal and collective grief through the soft expression of intentional space, guiding invocations, imaginal activities and tender closings. Our Community Highlight this month is our dear friend Theresa "Terri" Law...

Theresa J. Law, LPN, SPD, known by those close to her as Terri, holds a multi-state license through the State of Tennessee, having graduated from the Nashville Memorial School of Practical Nursing program in 1992.

Graduating from Conscious Dying Institute as a Conscious Dying Coach and Sacred Passage Doula has allowed her to integrate the practices of being present, authentic, and true listening into her daily life. Networking with others, while engaging in meaningful discussions about living life to its fullest is both enjoyable and enriching.

Terri's "Why":

"I've done this all my life and didn't know what to call it. Family, friends, and community members have contacted me for years for resources and understanding in difficult times. In 2020, I walked through several life experiences, and these significant changes allowed me the opportunity to pursue my studies with CDI."

Currently, Terri's work is in education and training, all related to end-of-life care, needs, and services. It is important to her to bring awareness of the services of a conscious dying coach and doula to our communities, as it affects us from this day forward. With her vast experience working in healthcare, banking, and legal services, Terri's strengths are utilized in the challenging needs of our senior community members. We must be able to reach our clients to build trust, often this takes other resources before they are ready for their doula's care.

Terri lives on their working family farm and enjoys personal time outside city life. The people that have inspired her are her mother - a positive force in her life. She showed Terri how to serve others, expecting nothing in return. Helping in times of need, loss, and loneliness with food, tidying a house, or helping with children. On the other side are Terri's two children, who support her through easy and difficult times, reminding her that life is here for us to do what we can and to leave a positive footprint where we walk.
